Austria: "What is going wrong in this land?"

Source:www.cnet.de

Austria - the image I have since I saw this film "The Sound of Music"
breathtaking view of mountains, laughing brooks and hills alive with
the sound of music as the song goes...pure idyll!

Austria - brings to my mind Beautiful Blue Danube by Johann Strauss,
our traditional yearly watching of Vienna New Year's Concert.

Austria means Mozart, his music and his now famous souvenirs
a must for every tourist...Mozart balls and other temptations
like the world's most famous cake - Sacher-Torte and Kaiserschmarrn
also known as the "emperor's mishmash".

Austria stands for Vienna Cafes where historically intellectuals
used to meet and maybe enjoy Viennese Apfelstrudel and Vienna sausage.

Austria stands for Sigmund Freund and his redefinition of
sexual desire and of course, the now famous "freudian slip".

(But not to forget, Hitler was also an Austrian and I personally
can not forget his date of birth as he has the same birthday
like my mother!)

So what is going wrong in this beautiful land?

All these beautiful images tarnished by this monster Josef F.
and his criminal doings against his own daughter.

And the most asked question...How come no one has noticed?
Not even his own wife???

How can she not notice it? Ask many Filipinas who call
their husbands to lunch or dinner and if they do not appear
at the table after the second call they would be screaming
and checking what they are doing in the cellar!!!

The question will remain...what is going wrong in
this beautiful land?

hi. allow me to answer your question.
am a filipina living in vienna, austria.
i agree that this is a horrendous story. a crime that is incomparable, i wonder why a person like Josef F. exists. and i am hoping that he will rot in jail.
but it is also the media's fault. it sickens me how the international media (especially the English media) treated the story, like what they did to Natascha Kampusch story.
perverse, mean, evil people exist everywhere. like perverse, mean, evil crimes happen all the time, anywhere.
two weeks after the amstetten case came out, the same crime was discovered somewhere in South America where a father also hid his daughter, raped her, made her pregnant.
it just happens that in a span of two years austria hogs the limelight again.
these crimes don't necessarily reflect that everything in austria now is wrong.
josef f's wife belongs to the earlier generation of women where they are kept privy to their husband's earnings, without proper education, without a voice in the family. believe me, she is not alone. and am sure women like her still exist in the philippines, in austria and even in germany.
why the family members and neighbours didn't notice is the case of suburban sickness and the mistakes from the local authorities. it is a fact that is most suburban areas/cities/big towns, people don't care a thing about their neighbours as long as they behave "normally" in public.

btw, Hitler was born an austrian but died as a german. he became its citizen in 1932. he would never be a german chancellor if he were not a german citizen.

this might sound that am defending this country. maybe, i am.
cheers!

Dear Elen,
Thanks for your comment. No, I am not saying that everything in Austria is now wrong. I love spending our holidays in that beautiful country. It is just that one bad incident ruins its beautiful name. Apropos another bad news, within a week, I heard over the radio that one Austrian guy living near Vienna murdered his wife, a child plus another person then droved to the place of his parents'in law and murdered them, too. The news said that he lives in this wealthy place in Austria and he has a nice garden. This has been a butt of jokes even with my girlfriend who lives in Vienna...see even a beautiful garden can't make you happy.
Hear from you. BTW, we have also a networking of women especially women migrants in Europe. Would be glad if you could network with us.

hi there tita bee,
i actually found this blog via the babaylan europe links. the problem is am not sure if Babaylan Austria is still active. saw the site and it is not anymore updated. i just emailed the chapter president and am expecting an answer. what do you think? anyway, is there a Babaylan chapter in Switzerland? Ms Hoegsholm suggested i could link to either Germany or Switzerland concerning membership questions.
so there. :)
re: viennese ax murderer. it is a jungle out there. and vienna slowly becomes a jungle to many people.
